The Case for Orphans
Who are some of the most neglected and
vulnerable people in the world? Unfortunately, it’s
the orphaned children. At this time in history there
are more orphans than ever before. Twenty million orphans
are estimated world wide with one child orphaned every
30 seconds.
Every child deserves to have their basic needs met.
Shelter, food, clothes and compassionate care are basic
human requirements. We all need to feel love and a sense
that we belong. We need fellowship and relationship
with others. If we are deprived of our basic human needs
we will suffer and eventually die. God calls himself
a father to the fatherless. He knows that children need
His help. Every civilized culture and every major religion
has heard a clear message.
It is our responsibility as believers or followers
to take up the case of the orphans. In James 1:27 it
states:
“Pure religion and undefiled before God is this,
to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction.”
Job’s righteousness was found in the fact that
in Job 29:12 he ‘delivered the poor when he cried
out, the fatherless and him that had no helper.’
In Deuteronomy God instructed the Jewish people that
every third year all of the tithe or offering was to
be allocated to the fatherless and the widow. Helping
the orphans is basic and foundational to humanity, and
Christianity. We all suffer when we do not reach out
to the neediest amongst us. Our life is enriched and
our reward is great in our giving to others, especially
the orphans.
